SEASON REPORT

We would firstly like to say ‘well done’ to all our growers for a challenging year. We are pleased to report a good result, for a season that constantly stopped and started with challenging weather (thanks to La Niña). In the end, the weather became fine, and this allowed for things to progress and everyone caught up quite quickly.

Total seed for this season was over 13,000 tonnes and (at the time of printing) we’ve dispatched almost 12,000 tonnes with a little over 1,300 tonnes remaining at Cherry Hill Coolstores. For the 2021 season we also moved over 6,600 tonnes of carrots and this helped keep the supply chain operational at a healthy pace, for growers and processors alike. A great result for all involved.

Our wonderful new carrot coolstores and washline shed are on track, check out the photos below.

Minitubers are being planted as we speak.

Our maintenance is on track, with our schedule already commencing four months ago. Our cutting and unloading machinery maintenance is finished for the season and about 30% of the cutting shed works are completed. Our general maintenance and cleaning is scheduled for late December and flowing into January, ready for
our 2022 season.

We thank you all for your continued confidence in Cherry Hill Coolstores and we wish you and your family a very Happy Christmas and New Year.

Best wishes from all of us at Cherry Hill Coolstores, Tasmanian Seed Potatoes, Hirt Quarries, and JACS Engineering and Maintenance.

CHRISTMAS CLOSURE DATES

Our last day in the office is Friday 17th December, and we re-open on Tuesday 4th January 2022.

CARROT SHEDS ARE ON TRACK

Andrew Langmaid is pretty excited that the new state-of-the-art coolstores for carrots, is on track for completion in time for the  March 2022 season. Pam, however, has said “no more sheds” as Andrew has been way too stressed lately! The new coolstores and carrot washline shed are enormous, and they are up and fully cladded already.

MINITUBERS AND PLANTING UPDATE

Growers have commenced the planting of minitubers and are expected to finish planting before Christmas.

Seed planting is looking great with about 80% of seed already in the ground. Luckily, the weather improved just in time for us to  have a good run and have all seeds planted in a timely manner.

Seed planting is on schedule to be completed by Friday 17th December. Good luck to everyone for the 2022 season.

TINA’S BIG DAY OUT: PLANTING PADDOCK FIELD TRIP

Tina has been working in the cutting shed for around 10 years now, and recently attended her first ever field trip to Richard Hardstaff’s planting paddock in Kindred. “The equipment is amazing!” said Tina, who thoroughly enjoyed seeing Richard on his state-of-the-art tractor, planting for a commercial crop. “Richard’s tractor is so clever, it basically steers itself”, she said. Richard’s tractor is kitted out with cameras capturing all angles and uses satellite navigation to plot its course, driving automatically.

INTRODUCING: JUSTIN JOHNSON

Justin began his career over 20 years ago, as a Boilermaker welder. Until recently he worked at Bell Bay but needed a change, which initiated the launch of JACS Engineering & Maintenance. Now working out of Latrobe, Justin is glad to spend less time on his daily commute to work. He lives in Devonport with his wife and two kids, and enjoys spending time with his family. In his spare time he loves relaxing with cricket and footy, and most of all he loves heading out for a day of fishing.

WHO IS JACS?

Justin is Managing Director of JACS Engineering & Maintenance, which was launched in 2021 and will have nine staff by February 2022. JACS looks after Cherry Hill Coolstores, Hirt Quarries, and various local engineering firms.

Services offered include Engineering fabrication, labour hire, field servicing, agricultural equipment, repairs and stock yards.

Call Justin on 0498 780 553 to discuss your next project.

HIRT QUARRIES, WE DIG YOU!

Hirt Quarries have had an amazing year already. Now employing four staff, a recent Workplace Standards audit verified they are doing everything perfectly – how good is that! Quite a few local domestic projects in the Hawley and Latrobe areas have kept them busy of late, and the new billboard and radio adverts are generating plenty of phone calls. Have you heard them yet on SeaFM or 7AD?

The team at Hirt Quarries are constantly improving procedures and safety at the quarry in Beulah, and scheduled maintenance has seen the cone replaced recently in their Cone Crusher – an ongoing priority every 6-12 months. Maddie and Shannon have sent an application to increase the load of materials they can produce, and 2022 will bring the development of new products available for you.

In our next newsletter, we’ll be able to share some pretty exciting news with you too…

TESTIMONIAL… “A great asset…”

“This is my first year working in my own right, growing minitubers, G1, G2 and commercials. I’ve found Andrew Vandenberg and Conor O’Doherty to be excellent – they are knowledgeable, professional and come with a wealth of experience. They are a great asset for Tasmanian Seed Potatoes, and especially for a new person to have so much guidance and support.”
